The town of Gurp (918 meters) is at 7.5 kilometers in the North-West of Tremp. It is in the top of the Seró’s gully, under different cavities of speleological interest in the mountain range of Gurp.
The name of Gurp has a Basque origin. The name makes reference to the Basque expression gorri-be, derived from gorri (vermell), with a suffix of location that means “under”. So, Gurp would be the town situated under the red (rock).
The town was born around its castle, of which we have not many references. In the year 1553 there were 11 houses and 55 inhabitants. The year 1718 there were 60 people living in Gurp. Actually, the population has reduced to 11 people.
In the town there are four Romance buildings:
- The Church of the town dedicated to Sant Serni of Gurp of the XII Century.
- The chapel of Sant Martí, of the XII Century, which is in the suburbs, near of the corner called Forat del Toscar, where there are the rests of the mill.
- At 1,5 kilometers one can find the ruins of the Church of Sant Miquel. We can also find the rests of Bordes de Seix, where there is the hermitage of Sant Elies.
- The bridge of the mill.
In the suburbs of the town there are the gully of the lions with waterfalls, caves and ponds. The canyoning experts consider it one of the most beautiful and completes of the zone.
Almost three popular dances are documented to be danced in Gurp: the dance of Morisca, the dance of Galop or Galop de cortesia and the dance of aranyons, collected by Joan Bellmunt.
